PCT 2022 #5 Northern California

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE (mile 1090) to BELDEN (mile 1287) The land has changed since leaving the Sierras. We still do several climbs per day but they peak at lower elevations (between 9,000′ and 7,000′) and progressively less. Initially the PCT at this point shared the path with the Tahoe Rim Trail which circumnavigates Lake Tahoe. Rock was everywhere!

Mosquitoes were vicious here!
Funky cottages amongst the rock.

The trail then turns gentle with fewer hard rock sections and the ground is mostly comprised of duff (wood fibre) and dirt. This is joyful to walk on and brings the spring back into our strides. Miles fly by on this easy ground!

The terrain alternates between tree groves and open ridge or traverses where we see for miles. The lakes scatter about the area and we aim to swim in as many as possible!!

We came across bears every day for awhile. Most were cinnamon coloured, only one was black with a brown sheen.

Bears seen 4. Wolves 1. Black tailed deer countless. Bobcat poops a few. Coyote 2. Cranes with rusty body feathers 2. Lizards ( tiny scuttling things) many. Snakes are being seen again in the dry lower lands.

The lakes scatter about the area and we aim to swim in as many as possible!! After all it is SUMMERTIME!! Yeah!

We have managed some Fabulous campsites! At this point in the season we sleep without the fly on our tent and enjoy seeing the wind in the trees, the stars across the sky and sunrises!

We had a resupply in Sierra City which was restful and had great food and then resupplied in Belden which was an unorganized understaffed hotel/bar and worst food ever. So things off the trail varies as well.

Leaving Belden

Life on the trail has its rhythms and make us happy.
