GDT # 2 COLEMAN Alberta

The Waterton/Montana border marker. The start of the GDT.

We are taking a calmer approach to this hike since it is shorter and we don’t have a deadline! Yeah!! We have hiked some 100+ kms so far in the summer sun surrounded by our own country’s Rocky Mountain beauty! Nothing pleases us more. The past 5 days has held a mix of terrain that includes forests, atv roads, steep ascents, and ridges.

Ridges are a highlight for hikers because they give you the best surround views but they can be difficult, and tricky if weather is not in your favour. There were 3 ridges in this stretch of the trail all varying in character. The Ridge above Sage Camp was an easy first thing in the morning climb with a long, gentle descent.

The La Coulotte Ridge was another story. Tough is a word that would be appropriate to use here. It was a steep ascent in small scree that swallowed up the footprints as soon as you moved on. It was hard to see where the trail was and a heavy footed climb where you went 10 steps and stopped to catch your breath due to elevation (2200-2400m) and not being in trail shape yet. We managed 4 km in 4.5 hours! Slow as shit! And the slope was steep with nothing to stop a fall. So you hike steady….but the views were stunning!

Running down clear and easy

The last ridge was on an ATV ( all terrain vehicle ) trail which took us by surprise. So gorgeous and so little effort as it lead to Coleman Alberta our resupply/rest stop.
