Hikers Along the AZT

We have met a collection of thru hikers to date and their names vary from: Mav – Blazing Turtle – Bearded Yucca – Maumee – Cough cough – Turkey – Moonshine – Sansui Wanderer – Happy Joe – Snacks – Red Feather – Wind Walker – Lily – Happy Go Lucky – Phantom – Stretch – Two Step – Stump – Mandolin – Fenway – Adam. People are on this hike for various reasons from being in between university and jobs to not really fitting into regular society to staying focussed on something while you are in submission from cancer to losing weight or being retired and living the wandering life. There are more solo male hikers than other types. Often there is a sense of competitiveness that drives some hikers which can be tiresome. Most people do fall into their own natural rhythm in time though. Our favourite hiker has been Lily from New York. She works as a bartender saves her money and goes walking. She has done the Appalachian Trail, the Camino, and is researching the G5 in Europe next. Her sense of humour makes it a pleasure to join up from time to time to debrief about our fellow thru hikers.
