Trail Angels

Trail Angels are big hearted people who do random kind things for thru hikers.

Marnie who owns the Chalet Motel in Oracle is such a person. She will fetch hikers from the highway if they text her and bring them to her motel regardless if they are paying guests or not. She allows hikers to camp in her backyard if her rooms are full, do their laundry and help themselves to coffee all for free. She will shuttle hikers to restaurants or trailheads when they are ready to continue on their journey, hold resupply packages and regularly stock jugs of water at strategic dry locations on the trail. She keeps a motherly eye open for solo women hikers and takes the time to chat up their situations.

“Sequoia”, a middle aged man, is another Angel. He stations himself and his fifth wheeler for several months at an isolated Trailhead on the AZT about 30 miles into the flat desert from Oracle. As you approach this dusty empty parking lot, you spot all these chairs set up and as soon as he spots you he asks whether you eat hot dogs or grilled cheese or if you want cold or hot or alcoholic refreshments! Within minutes you are seated and served food and just giggling with the unexpected comforts that you are experiencing! I couldn’t wipe the smile off my face for the rest of the day after being treated to his kindness! Although Trail Angels don’t ask or expect donations, we gave generously. You don’t get that many lifts in life like these!!
