100 Miles into the AZT: LESSONS LEARNED

  • Snow is a motivating element on a hike, but two-faced, as it creates nervous survival tension underneath the soft beauty. You encourage yourself to keep moving to preserve your body heat.
  • Eating almost frozen power bars while continuously hiking will not aid digestion.
  • It is possible to hike for consecutive days with soaking wet footwear. TIP:  put dry socked feet into plastic bags into wet shoes on day 2- and then hope  continuously for sun!
  • The bonus of snow and rain in the desert is plentiful water supply!
  • The Arizona weather watch is accurate. Weather is always real and all encompassing on the trail. IT DOMINATES.
  • Physical body stresses that surface may be ongoing on a long hike but having a kinesiologist resource person can dissolve the mental stress that accompanies them. THANKS JY!!
  • Chanting (especially the ones I create) and thankful thoughts help me to settle into a rhythm and keep calmly focussed at times  (like when I was limping to the highway to get a physio consultation about the consistent aggravated tightness near my Achilles tendon)
